Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're new to CrossFit, or want to know more about us, we've compiled a list of most commonly asked questions.

Do I need experience or a minimum level of fitness to CrossFit?

Absolutely not. Our workouts and exercises scale to any fitness level and can even be more beneficial if you start CrossFitting without any knowledge of how to exercise. That way you get to learn the important fundamentals at the outset. This will allow you to develop a great base. Exercising without coaching can lead to improper form, muscular imbalances, and higher risk for injury

Isn't CrossFit just for elite athletes?

CrossFit is for EVERYONE! We focus on functional movements that are essential to every day real life for the young and old, fit or frail. It benefits children to learn proper mechanics to avoid injuries when they are active. Our seniors need it to preserve health and improve quality of life. Here's proof. Bottom line, everyone will benefit from CrossFit.

How many times per week do I need to do CrossFit for best results?

Results are highly individualized and depend on motivation, experience, current physical condition and many other factors. We recommend that our members attend two classes per week to start. After completing the Elements Program, building to three times per week is encouraged. Some CrossFitters enjoy the classes so much they build to three, four and even five times per week.

Is the Elements Course mandatory?

Yes. All new members, regardless of fitness level or CrossFit experience are required to attend the Elements program. Learn more about our Elements Course and what is covered.

Big Sky CrossFit

Is CrossFit safe? I heard you can get hurt doing CrossFit, is this true?

Any physical activity can result in injury. CrossFit is safer than most activities because we incorporate movements your body is MEANT to do. To begin, you will learn the basics and master the movement mechanics. Once you can effectively perform the techniques consistently, then we increase the intensity. Safety is a huge priority to us.

Your workouts sound and look intense; I could never do that.

No worries; the majority of our members cannot either. The WOD is made to challenge an elite athlete. But that same workout is scaled to YOUR skill level. When you start, you will be doing a modified version of the WOD. We change the load (weights), repetitions, rounds, and distances to fit your abilities. Modifying the WODs will prevent you from over exerting yourself and prevent overwhelming soreness.

Why does CrossFit cost more than the franchise gyms and fitness centers?

CrossFit is actually more fun & affordable than paying dues and a personal trainer at a "Globo-Gym". At Big Sky CrossFit you will experience individual attention, detailed training in your movement, and seriously creative energy every single workout. At Big Sky CrossFit we focus on you. We will work hard to bring you an experience that not only provides the best physical results you’ve ever felt but also engages you in a community of people all interested in really living life.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes. If you’re a full-time student, working as a law enforcement officer, in fire and life saving services, or the military, you're entitled to special pricing. Also, if you sign up as a group, there’s an ongoing discount, and we have a referral bonus if you bring in someone new.

Can I check it out before I join?

You bet. If you are new to CrossFit or want to check us out, you are welcome to come in and watch one of our training sessions. If you would like to give it a try, you can join us for a FREE one-on-one Intro Session. They are free to all interested members-to-be and give us a chance to get to know you, your goals, expectations, and fitness experience. The Intro also lets you learn more about CrossFit and the program we offer. Just contact us [link to contact us page ] for an appointment and make sure to eat 1-2 hours before arrival; and show up 5-10 minutes before the class starts so you can fill out a waiver form and warm up.

What is your policy on drop-ins from other CrossFit gyms?

If you are a member at another CrossFit, or have been regularly CrossFitting, you're welcome to drop in to any of our regularly-scheduled group classes when you are visiting Great Falls. Just be sure to arrive for your first class at least 10 minutes early to fill out a waiver and introduce yourself to the coach. If you are a paying member at another CrossFit gym, participate in our shirt exchange by bringing one from your local box, or purchase one of ours ($15). Our standard drop-in rate ($15) applies otherwise.

What makes "Big Sky CrossFit" different than the other CrossFit locations out there?

CrossFit is not a chain or franchise, each 'affiliate' (CrossFit gym) is individually owned and operated. That being said, there can be big differences in coaching experience, class practices, equipment offerings, operating hours, etc.

Big Sky CrossFit is staffed by active and experienced professionals who genuinely care about the health and wellness of their community. Staff members are broadly credentialed, have coached and excelled in collegiate-level, as well as, multiple high school sports, and enthusiastically participate in local social sports leagues, too. We are also one of the most accommodating locations in Montana - running our first WODs at 5:00 am, Monday through Friday. We currently run two sessions on Saturday, too.
